Harworth Group and Greentech have submitted a planning application to the Telford & Wrekin Commission for the development of a solar farm on the site of a former open-pit coal mine in Shropshire, England. The planning application is expected to be finalized by the Telford & Wrekin committee later in 2021.
The proposed solar farm will generate 28,500 megawatt-hours of renewable electricity each year. The project will be delivered by a joint partnership between Harworth and Greentech. Environmental improvement strategies for the site include planting or strengthening 3 kilometers of hedges, creating new wetland habitats, and planting areas with native trees, shrub habitats and wildflower meadows to improve local biodiversity.
Greentech worked with Harworth to manage the project from the concept, and will continue to do so during the planning and construction phases and during the long-term ownership period. Harworth Senior Asset Manager Matthew Smith, Harworth said: "The proposed New Works solar farm will be the embodiment of the green industrial revolution planned by the British government to transform a former open-pit coal mine into a major renewable energy farm.
