In 2020, the global solar industry added 138.2 GW of new facilities, an increase of 18% year-on-year, setting a global annual installation record for the industry. The expected growth rate in 2022 is 25%. By the end of 2025, the world can operate up to 2.1 TW of solar fleets, compared with 773.2 GW at the end of 2020.

SolarPower Europe has released a new global market outlook, providing the global solar industry with market intelligence for 2020 and production capacity forecasts for 2021-2025.

Solar energy becomes the main force of power generation

The report stated that despite the continued impact of COVID-19, 138.2GW of solar energy was installed in 2020. Solar's growth confirmed its dominance in all newly installed power generation technologies, reaching a global share of 39%. Another important milestone for 2020 is the global cumulative solar capacity of 773.2 gigawatts, exceeding three-quarters of a terawatt for the first time in history.

The top five solar market in 2020 is China, with 48.2 GW of new installed capacity, 19.2 GW in the United States, 11.6 GW in Vietnam, 8.2 GW in Japan, and 5.1 GW in Australia. "Looking back at 2020, we see the amazing growth of solar energy ignoring the possibility of reaching record levels of installations. Looking to the future, we have reason to be optimistic and expect the global solar industry to be very strong in the next four years. In fact, by 2020 We expect the global solar market to grow by 25% to 203 GW, and annual photovoltaic installations will exceed the 200 GW level for the first time. Considering that the 200 GW threshold in 2022 will be reached only five years after reaching the 100 GW level, this is particularly impressive Impressed," said Michael Schmela, head of market intelligence at SolarPower Europe.

"Although solar energy has surprised us with the greater number of installations, this is certainly something to be celebrated, but considering that 70% of the world's electricity still comes from non-renewable polluting energy sources, we need policy makers to be more ambitious to enable the industry Accelerate development and deployment to realize the full potential of solar energy and achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement," Schmela added. Editor/XuNing
