Electric power infrastructure construction is an important source of power for the country’s social and economic development. Recently, the National Electricity Authority of Thailand launched the overall plan for the upgrade and transformation of the national transmission network in the next 10 years. It is estimated that the total investment amount through 17 specific projects will not be less than 240 billion. baht.

According to the overall development plan, in the next 10 years from 2021 to 2030, the State Electricity Authority of Thailand will promote the implementation of the power grid upgrade and transformation plan in two phases. The investment budget for the first five years of the first phase (2021-2025) totals 136.405 billion baht, while the budget for the second five-year plan (2026-2030) is 106.162 billion baht. The total budget of the two phases is 242.567 billion baht.

At present, Thailand's "Alternative Energy Development Plan" has been revised. By 2021, the number of renewable energy will increase from 9,201MW to 13,927MW. This plan is to vigorously promote alternative energy sources and ensure a balance between food and energy security. Other policies related to renewable energy in the "Alternative Energy Development Plan" are also being implemented. The grid connection depends on the capacity of the transmission system. To this end, EGAT has proposed a series of power transmission system projects to cope with the development of renewable energy, solve the problems that may be caused by large-scale grid connection, and maintain the safety of the power transmission network.

The capacity of the transmission grid in some areas has caused a certain degree of restriction on the access to renewable energy, because the original design of the transmission grid is to improve the system security at the minimum cost and accommodate the largest amount of electricity from large-scale traditional power stations as much as possible. To build a large-scale renewable energy base and connect it to the grid, the security and stability of the system must be considered. If the scale and location of the renewable energy power generation system can be determined, it is possible to find the lowest cost grid-connected solution for the transmission system.

Officials believe that this will provide strong support for economic recovery. The outbreak of the epidemic has severely hit the Thai economy, and state-owned enterprises have played an important role in recovering the economy. According to data provided by the Thai Ministry of Energy, the total investment expenditure in the energy sector alone in the first half of 2021 will exceed 100 billion baht. While creating jobs, it has also played a vital role in stabilizing the epidemic economy. Editor/Xu Shengpeng
