On August 21, 2021, the Nagqu-Yangbajing section of the G6 Beijing-Tibet Expressway was opened for trial operation. So far, the 295-kilometer-long G6 Beijing-Tibet Expressway from the Naqu-Lhasa section has been opened to traffic, and the total mileage of high-grade highways in Tibet has been opened to traffic. 1105 kilometers.

The Nala Expressway is the first expressway connecting Lhasa, the capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region, and the grasslands of northern Tibet. After opening to traffic, the journey between Lhasa and Nagqu has been shortened from more than 6 hours on National Highway 109 to 3 hours now. This highway was built in an area with an average altitude of more than 4,500 meters, making it the highest highway in the world.

The starting point of the Nala Expressway is located in the southwest of the planning area of Nagqu County in Nagqu City. It connects to National Highway 109, ends at Poma Village, Naiqiong Town, Duilong Deqing District, Lhasa City, and connects to the existing Lhasa West Ring Road. Among them, the Yangbajing-Lhasa section has a design speed of 100 kilometers per hour and a total length of 68 kilometers. It was opened to traffic on October 1, 2020.

The opening of the Nala Expressway to traffic has significantly improved the capacity, safety, and transportation services of the Qinghai-Tibet Grand Corridor, which is conducive to promoting resource development and exchanges and integration of various ethnic groups in Tibet, especially in northern Tibet, and achieving long-term stability and high-quality development for Tibet. It has great practical significance and far-reaching historical significance.

The Nala Expressway is an important project of the Ministry of Transport and the Tibet Autonomous Region’s 13th Five-Year Plan for highway development. It is also a major project for the expansion and upgrading of the Qinghai-Tibet Grand Corridor. It is the integration of Tibet into the Belt and Road regional economic integration and the construction of a major opening to South Asia. Important infrastructure has an extremely important position and role in the country and Tibet's highway network.
