Official sources said that as part of its expansion plan, Abu Dhabi Refinery (Takreer) is considering revamping the hydrocracking complex at its Ruwais refinery. The new capacity will increase the refining profit margin and revenue of the Takreer refining business. An official added that Takreer has appointed Universal Oil Products (UOP) in the United Kingdom to conduct a feasibility study.

The current capacity of the complex is 27,000 barrels per day (bpsd). The enhanced capabilities have not yet been determined. "This research is planned to be completed in mid-2021. The actual implementation of the transformation project will depend on the results." UOP is a process licensor of hydrocracking technology for upgrading low-value vacuum gas oil into high-value products, such as Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), naphtha, jet fuel and gas oil. Due to the process chemistry involved, the product has a low contaminant content.

The hydrocracking complex at Takreer’s Ruwais refinery includes vacuum distillation, hydrogen production and HC Unibon, acid water stripping, hydrogen sulfide removal and sulfur recovery units. In January 2021, Takreer announced plans to build a base oil refinery with an annual capacity of 300,000 tons. The plant will be designed to produce various grades of base oils for the preparation of lubricating oils. The project was announced after the completion of the two-phase study completed by Takreer.Editor/XuNing
