Upgrading Scotland's important A9 route further extension project is a step forward. The tendering process has now started and will be managed by the Scottish Department of Transport. The contract is expected to be awarded in 2022.
The conversion of the 6-kilometer-long A9 road between Tomatin and Moy into a two-lane road is expected to cost 115 million pounds. This section of A9 is located south of Inverness. In total, upgrading the A9 project between Perth and Inverness will cost £3 billion.
Improvements to the A9 are necessary because this road has only one lane for most of its length, and relatively many collisions have occurred over the years. The traffic volume can be high, and winter roads can also be very dangerous as they are often closed due to snow in winter. This route carries a large number of tourist traffic during the summer months, and a known factor that causes a significant number of frontal collisions is that drivers driving left-handed vehicles try to overtake slower heavy trucks.

Safety measures previously introduced include allowing HGV to increase speed in an attempt to reduce the number of dangerous overtakings. They also include the installation of average speed cameras along the A9 to reduce the incidence of speeding.Editor/Baohongying
