British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Minister of Commerce, Energy and Industrial Strategy Kwasi Kwateng recently confirmed a milestone commitment to achieve the decarbonization of the British power system by 2035, in order to promote the United Kingdom to achieve the goal of zero net emissions. The plan will focus on establishing a safe local energy industry, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and the impact of global energy price fluctuations.
The plan is based on the "10-point plan for the green industrial revolution" and advances the goal of fully decarbonizing the power system by 2050 in the UK proposed in the "Energy White Paper" by 15 years.
To ensure that this ambition becomes a reality, the British government will work hard to deploy a new generation of indigenous technologies-from offshore wind, hydrogen and solar to nuclear, onshore wind and carbon capture and storage. These green technologies will make use of Britain’s abundant natural resources to provide cleaner and cheaper electricity and create thousands of new high-skilled jobs in new industries across the UK. Although natural gas power generation plays a key role in maintaining the safety and stability of the British power system, the development of clean energy technologies means that the frequency of natural gas use will decrease in the future.
The British government will use the "Net-Zero Strategy" to detail a broad plan to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The strategy will be announced before the COP26 climate summit. Editor/Xu Shengpeng
