On January 8, 2022, the launching ceremony of the restoration project of the Tha Bingyu Pagoda in Bagan, Myanmar, aided by the Chinese government, was officially held in Bagan.

Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar Chen Hai said at the launching ceremony that his Bingyu Pagoda is the tallest Buddhist building in Bagan and one of the most famous pagodas in Myanmar. After many discussions with the Ministry of Religion and Culture of Myanmar, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage of China and the Ministry of Religion and Culture of Myanmar jointly determined that the Chinese side will repair the Ta Bingyu Pagoda damaged by the earthquake, and the technical team of Shaanxi Province and Yunnan Province of China will undertake the specific responsibility. Chen Hai said that the Chinese team will work with Myanmar to carry out the overall restoration of the Tha Bingyu Pagoda in an all-round way in accordance with the requirements of UNESCO on the protection of world cultural heritage, and jointly safeguard this common cultural heritage of mankind.

Thon Weng, deputy minister of Myanmar's Ministry of Religion and Culture, said that the cooperation between Myanmar and China on the restoration of the pagoda has made the "Paukphaw" friendship between the two countries closer. Cultural exchanges and cooperation between the two countries are crucial to the protection of cultural heritage, and the cooperation between the two countries in this field will surely promote the friendship between the two countries.

On August 24, 2016, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 occurred in central Myanmar, causing damage to hundreds of pagodas and statues, including the Tha Bingyu Pagoda. During the first Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation held in Beijing in May 2017, China and Myanmar signed the "Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the Post-earthquake Restoration and Protection of Bagan Historical Sites in Myanmar". In September 2018, China and Myanmar signed an agreement in Bagan to assist in the restoration of the Bingyu Pagoda. Since May 2019, the Chinese side has successively completed the assessment of the main structure of the Ta Bingyu Pagoda, the emergency reinforcement of the pagoda, and the in-depth design of the overall restoration plan.
