On January 17, 2022, Finance Minister Assen Vassilev announced that Bulgaria is seeking to build a four-year infrastructure plan worth about 6.1 billion euros, noting that the plan includes the construction of up to five buildings between the Danube and Romania. bridges, and the construction of three road tunnels under the Stara Planina mountains.

He said the plan also included work on the Struma and Cherno More motorways. The 156-kilometer Struma highway stretches from the capital Sofia to the Greek border.
