Recently, the National Railway Group and the Qinghai Provincial Government jointly approved the preliminary design of the quality improvement project of the Xining-Golmud section of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, which means that the project has taken a key step towards the goal of full construction within this year. It is reported that since the project was approved for feasibility study in 2021, the Qinghai Provincial Development and Reform Commission, together with the Qinghai-Tibet Group Corporation, local governments along the route, and relevant units directly under the province, have accelerated the preliminary work of the project, and completed the approval of various prerequisites ahead of schedule. The approval of the preliminary design has laid a solid foundation.

The Qinghai-Tibet Railway Xining-Golmud section upgrade project is a major livelihood project planned and implemented in Qinghai Province during the 14th Five-Year Plan period. To meet the standards, improve quality and efficiency and sustainable development needs. The implementation of the project will further expand the service scope of Fuxing EMU in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, expand the effective supply of railway transportation, and improve the quality of transportation services.

Through the upgrading and reconstruction of the existing Qinghai-Tibet Railway Xining-Golmud section, the project realizes the running of 160 km/h power centralized EMU trains along the entire line from Xining to Golmud. The project will also build a new Haiyan station building and renovate and expand the Delingha station building. The estimated total investment of the project is 1.499 billion yuan, and the construction period is 1.5 years.

In the future, after the project is completed and put into operation, the train running time from Xining to Golmud can be controlled within 5.2 hours, which is nearly 2 hours shorter than the current fastest train. Xining Station, Huangyuan Station, Haiyan Station, Wulan Station, Delingha Station, and Golmud Station along the line will all handle EMU stops, allowing people of all ethnic groups along the line to share high-quality railway transportation services.
