South Korea and China are vying to build a subway in Chittagong, Bangladesh's second-largest city. The project, the second of its kind in the country, will be procured on the basis of a public-private partnership (PPP). South Korea said it will take part in the competition at a meeting with the Bangladesh PPP Authority in Seoul on March 2. The gathering brought together the authorities and the South Korean government, as well as two agencies, the Korea Overseas Infrastructure and Urban Development Corporation.
Abu Bashar, director-general of the Bangladeshi authorities, said it welcomed South Korea's interest in the subway and would forward its proposal to the prime minister's office for further consideration. "We will inform South Korea which Bangladeshi agency will handle the proposal. They will be in communication with the agency and select investors in their country. This is how PPP projects are implemented," he said. Consultations will also be made to implement a similar approach in the capital. System of Dhaka public transport company. Last month, South Korea expressed interest in conducting a pre-feasibility study for the subway, and the Korea International Cooperation Agency provided a $5 million grant to carry out the study.
The South Koreans are facing bids from four Chinese state-owned contractors who are planning to build networks and smart cities on land reclaimed from the sea. The Chinese offered to fund the two plans in exchange for a share of their operating profits, as well as special funding for feasibility studies. Another subway feasibility study in 2019 by engineering firm Basasthan estimated the cost of building three lines would be just over $10 billion. Chittagong, also known as Chittagong, is the busiest seaport in the Bay of Bengal with a population of 8.7 million in its metropolitan area. Keywords: engineering construction, engineering news
