BP has signed a joint venture (JV) agreement with Aberdeen City Council to develop the Aberdeen Hydrogen Centre in the Scottish city of Aberdeen to address growing hydrogen demand. Developed in three phases, the Urban Hydrogen Hub will be a scalable green hydrogen production, storage and distribution facility. BP said it would be powered by renewable energy.

The first phase of the Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub will see the development of green hydrogen production and transport bunkering facilities. It will be powered by a solar power plant. The first phase of the project is designed to start production in 2024 and is expected to provide more than 800 kilograms of green hydrogen per day. That's the equivalent of refueling 25 buses and almost as many other fleet vehicles.

Aberdeen City Council Leader Jenny Laing said: “We now see the benefits of having a Hydrogen Plan for 2015, which clearly illustrates the scale of our ambition to deploy hydrogen in Aberdeen. “We were ahead of the curve at the time, Impressively, seven years on, we have a developing hydrogen economy with 85 hydrogen-powered vehicles deployed across the city, fueling infrastructure and a joint venture with BP to provide hydrogen production and distribution centers. The joint venture, called BP Aberdeen Hydrogen Energy, will invest £3 million in initial design work. A final investment decision on the construction of the first phase of the facility is expected in early 2023.

According to BP, future phases could involve scaling up production through further investments to provide more green hydrogen for rail, sea and freight. The hydrogen produced will also be used for heating and possible export purposes. Increased domestic renewable energy supply, including developments resulting from the Scot Wind offshore wind leasing round, is expected to boost the expansion of hydrogen facilities.

Louise Kingham, BP UK Country Head and Senior Vice President Europe, said: "BP is investing in all areas of energy transition growth in the UK. In fact, we have committed to spend £2 in the UK for every £1 we generate by mid-century "Today's announcement is a testament to this committed action and is backed by other ambitious plans to generate clean energy from offshore wind in the UK, develop carbon capture at Teesside and develop electric vehicles in the country. charging network. In November 2021, BP confirmed plans to advance HyGreen Teesside, a green hydrogen production facility in the UK. The HyGreen Teesside plant is designed to produce up to 500MWe of hydrogen by the end of 2030.Editor/XingWentao
