The Maharashtra State Power Generation Corporation (MAHAGENCO) and the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) will form a joint venture to build a mega solar park in the state to generate 2,500 megawatts of green electricity. The Rs 1,727 crore project proposal, launched in 2020, was approved by the state cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.
According to the plan, NTPC or its subsidiaries and the MAHAGENCO joint venture will each invest 50% in the development of ultra-large solar power parks, with the Ministry of Energy serving as the national node agency. The parks are proposed to be developed in three phases under an Engineering, Procurement and Commissioning (EPC) contract on land owned by MAHAGENCO and other lands belonging to the state, centre or private property of the large corporation. One-time fees, operation and maintenance fees, etc. are charged to the project party in the solar park.
In terms of unconventional energy, by March 21, 2025, 17,360 MW of power generation projects will be developed, of which 12,930 MW will be solar projects. The projects will create 7,500 jobs during construction and 5,000 during operation, while providing an affordable alternative to traditional but expensive fossil fuels.
