Vietnam's power industry has great potential for medium and long-term investment, and there are still power supply shortages in some areas. According to the "2021-2030 National Electric Power Development Plan Proposal for 2045" (the Eighth Electric Power Plan), Vietnam's total installed power capacity in 2030 will reach about 146,000 MW.
The General Office of the Vietnamese Government has just released the concluding comments made by Deputy Prime Minister Le Van Thanh during a video conference on the planning proposal.
According to the Vietnamese government, the Eighth Electricity Planning Proposal is a particularly important plan in the national industry planning system, formulated by the Ministry of Industry and Trade in accordance with Decision No. 1264/QĐ-TTg approved by the Prime Minister on October 1, 2019. This industry plan has been highly concerned by all parts of the country, and many valuable opinions and suggestions have been put forward during the planning process.
The meeting basically reached an agreement on the national total installed power capacity of about 146,000 MW in 2030. This scale of power generation fully meets the estimated electricity demand of about 93,300 megawatts by 2030. Compared with the plan submitted by the Ministry of Industry and Trade to the Prime Minister in March 2021, this result is significantly more reasonable and superior, in which the total installed power capacity will be reduced by about 35,000 MW, and the 500 kV and 220 kV transmission lines will be reduced. approximately 2,000 km; thus reducing investment capital requirements for the power sector in the period 2021-2030.
In the long run, by 2045, the General Assembly will basically reach a consensus to fulfill Vietnam's international commitment to carbon emissions, that is, its determination to achieve zero emissions by 2050; the power sector will focus on the transformation of green energy and clean energy to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The total power supply capacity is estimated to be around 400,000 MW. The Deputy Prime Minister of the government asked the Ministry of Industry and Trade to continue to adopt the opinions put forward at the meeting, improve the planning, and complete the approval process as soon as possible.
