Tanzania's Minister of Works and Transport, Professor Makame Mbarawa, laid the foundation stone for the Makutupora-Tabora Phase III of the Dar es Salaam-Mwanza Standard Gauge Railway project at the CheyoB Stadium in Tabora.
The 368km Makutupora-Tabora section will have eight passenger and cargo terminals at Manyoni, Itigi, Kazikazi, Tura, Malongwe, Goweko, Igalula and Tabora.
Turkey's Yap Merkezi was awarded a $1.9 billion EPC contract for infrastructure works, including signaling, telecommunications and electrification. The project must be completed within 3 years and 10 months, including commissioning. “Our company has undertaken the construction of the first two phases of the Dar es Salaam-Mwanza railway in Tanzania, which will be the fastest railway in East Africa,” said Mr. Erdem Arıoğlu, Deputy Chairman of Yap Merkezi Construction. The standard gauge railway with a total length of 1,219 kilometers and a speed of 160 kilometers per hour will be constructed in five phases: Phase 1 Dar es Salaam-Morogoro, Phase 2 Morogoro-Makutupora, Phase 3 Makutupora-Tabora, Phase 4 Tabora-Isaka, and Stage 5 Ithaka-Mwanza. About 80% of the new railway will be built parallel to the existing meter gauge line, while 20% will be on the new route to avoid sharp turns.Editor/XingWentao
