The Saudi Water Partnership (SWPC) announced that the Riyadh-Qasim Independent Water Pipeline (IWTP) project has been pre-qualified by 20 developers/consortiums of developers and will have a water delivery capacity of 685,000 cubic meters per day when completed. . The SWPC said in a statement that the IWTP program is designed to help the Saudi Arabian government achieve its goal of ensuring the sustainable development of the kingdom's water resources, while providing affordable, high-quality services.

The statement lists the pre-qualified bidders (lead and/or technology) as: Spanish infrastructure giant CobraInstalacionesyServicios; Japan's Marubeni Corporation; Italian Sicim and Chinese conglomerates - Gezhouba Group Overseas Investment, Harbor Engineering Company; Railway Construction Company . In addition, regional companies such as Utico and Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (both from the United Arab Emirates), Kuwait Gulf Investment Company and Bahrain Energy Investment Company Lamar Holding are also listed.

In December 2021, SWPC said a total of 31 companies had expressed interest in the project, of which 19 were Saudi companies. Local companies that have now been pre-qualified include Abdul Aziz Al Aj lan Sons; Hak Pijpleidingen Saudi; Bhawani Hydro; Al-Fahd Trading Industries and Contracting; Alkhorayef Hydro Technologies; ; Mutlaq Al Ghowairi; Nesma and Vision International Investments.

SWPC has previously said it will go through a competitive process to select a developer/developer consortium for the 1,392km pipeline project, which will be implemented on a build, own, operate and transfer (BOOT) basis. Under the agreement signed with SWPC, the winning bidder will provide the Saudi utility with full transmission capacity under a 35-year water transmission agreement, the statement said.
