Spanish power company Iberdrola has received approval from Germany's Federal Office for Maritime Affairs and Hydrology (BSH) to develop Baltic Eagle, the largest offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea. The Baltic Eagle wind farm, located 30 kilometers northeast of the island of Rügen, is part of a 1.1GW offshore wind complex under construction at an investment of 3.5 billion euros ($3.7 billion).

With a capacity of 476 megawatts, Baltic Eagle will have the potential to generate enough clean energy to power 475,000 homes while displacing more than 800,000 tons of carbon emissions per year. The wind farm is expected to come online by the end of 2024. The wind energy complex currently includes the 350 MW Wikinger offshore wind farm, commissioned in 2017, and the 300 MW wind facility Windanker, which is scheduled to start operations in 2026. As part of the construction work, Iberdrola has begun to remove unexploded ordnance from the seabed and to ensure the production of basic components.

Spanish company Windar is said to have manufactured the facility's first 50 transition pieces, which will be used to connect the wind turbine towers to the foundation. The process is expected to create around 800 jobs. It is understood that the German company EEWSPC has completed the production of the first monopile at its Rostock plant, and the fleet of 50 monopile will be completed in early 2023. "The offshore substation is also on schedule and the platform is expected to be delivered for site installation in 2022," Iberdrola said in a statement. "The substation is under construction and will be used jointly by Iberdrola and northeastern Germany's transmission system operator 50Hertz, responsible for Connecting offshore wind farms to the grid. Earlier this month, Iberdrola won the rights to the James Hill wind farm in Australia.Editor/XingWentao
