The Egyptian government is looking to speed up renewable energy projects in the country, with plans to produce about 10,000 megawatts of solar and other renewable energy by 2023. The government expects renewable energy production to increase in the coming year, when many energy projects will be completed and put into operation.
The Egyptian government aims to increase the share of clean and green energy in the North African country's energy mix, with construction projects including green hydrogen and ammonia plants that will help export. Renewable energy will also be used in desalination projects and agricultural irrigation, but this will require significant investment in the renewable energy sector.
Hamza said: “We have set a target in our energy strategy to reach a renewable energy production level of 10.000 megawatts by 2023, and considering Egypt has long sunny days and good wind speeds, we are sure we can achieve this,” said Hamza. a goal.
Last month, EU climate policy chief Frans Timmermans said in Egypt that Egypt could play a key role in supplying Europe with clean energy as the bloc looks to reduce and subsequently eliminate its reliance on fossil fuels.
Subsequently, UAE-based renewable energy giant Masdar and investment firm Hassan Allam Utilities signed two memorandums of understanding with Egypt to develop green hydrogen production plants in the Suez Canal Economic Zone and along the Mediterranean Sea.
The New and Renewable Energy Authority reports that Egypt’s renewable energy capacity in 2021 will be 24,000 GW/h. It also said 3,570 megawatts worth of renewable energy projects were under development, attracting $3.5 billion in investment. Egypt, like Morocco, another North African country, has the opportunity to export renewable energy through transcontinental power lines, however cost and other infrastructure challenges remain to be overcome.Editor/XingWentao
