On May 29, 2022, the third-phase reconstruction and expansion project of Taiyuan Wusu International Airport officially started construction. This is a key project for the construction of the airport in the 14th Five-Year Plan of the Civil Aviation Administration of China, and it is also a strategic project in Shanxi.

Phase III Reconstruction and Expansion Project

It is reported that Taiyuan Wusu International Airport was built in 1939. In the 1970s, it was renovated, and after the reform and opening up, it was renovated and expanded twice. On October 25, 2017, the annual passenger throughput of Taiyuan Wusu International Airport exceeded 10 million for the first time, officially entering the ranks of ten million airports in my country. In 2019, the passenger throughput exceeded 14 million. After the completion of the third-phase reconstruction and expansion project, Taiyuan Wusu International Airport will have 126 seats, which can meet the needs of an annual passenger throughput of 40 million and an annual cargo and mail throughput of 300,000 tons, becoming an aviation engine for Shanxi's future high-quality development.

The total investment of the third-phase reconstruction and expansion project of Taiyuan Wusu International Airport is 23 billion yuan. It is designed according to the annual passenger throughput of 40 million person-times and the annual cargo and mail throughput of 300,000 tons. The air zone grade index is 4E. The 45-meter second runway and the corresponding taxiway system, the 400,000-square-meter T3 terminal building and the 126-seat station apron, the 50,000-square-meter comprehensive transportation center, the 130,000-square-meter parking building and other supporting facilities . The construction period of the project is about 4 years, and it is planned to be completed and put into operation before the end of 2025. At that time, Taiyuan Wusu International Airport will have a qualitative improvement in its support capacity, operational efficiency and the driving role of the airport economy.

Terminal T3 aims to build a three-star green building, scientifically applies new materials, new equipment, and new technologies, and builds a multi-layered lighting and ventilation atrium, allowing soft skylight to spread into the interior space of the terminal, realizing the main Natural lighting in functional areas and natural ventilation for 13% of the year provide passengers with a comfortable travel experience.
