Three South Korean companies have signed an agreement with UAE-based Petrolyn Chemie to build a $1 billion green hydrogen and ammonia manufacturing plant in the UAE. The three companies include power company Korea Electric Power, construction and engineering firm Samsung C&C, and power supply and trading company Korea Western Electric Power. Petrolyn Chemie is a joint venture between UAE energy companies Petrolyn and Chemie Tech.
The new plant is planned to produce 200,000 tons of green ammonia per year and will be built in the KIZAD Industrial Zone near the capital Abu Dhabi. It will be constructed in two phases, with the first phase expected to produce 35,000 tonnes and then the second phase being fully completed. Green hydrogen is produced by splitting water molecules through renewable electricity, separating elemental hydrogen from oxygen. It is considered an important fuel for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Both the UAE and Saudi Arabia have ambitious hydrogen plans. Petrolyn said: "Participating companies will achieve their respective net zero visions through this project. They are expected to amplify the drivers of future growth of the global green hydrogen market by expanding the replication of future business models." In March 2022, the UAE signed a memorandum of understanding with the Netherlands on clean hydrogen and the decarbonisation of its energy sector. Masdar, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company and BP have signed a partnership agreement to study a clean hydrogen project in Abu Dhabi. The UAE Green Hydrogen Ammonia Project is Korea's first overseas green hydrogen ammonia project.Editor/XingWentao
