Italian energy company Eni and four other oil companies have been selected by Qatar as partners in a $30 billion northern oilfield expansion project to be developed by Qatar Energy. The other four companies are Exxon Mobil, TotalEnergies, Shell and ConocoPhillips. Chevron did not get a stake in LNG.
ExxonMobil, Shell and TotalEnergies are expected to account for nearly 20-25% of the NorthField expansion's total offtake. The three companies could each get an LNG train. ConocoPhillips and Eni are expected to share the carriage of the fourth LNG train. Qatar Energy has not ruled out transferring a small stake in the project to a Chinese partner.
According to Qatar Energy, the Northfield expansion project will double Qatar's LNG production capacity. The project requires the construction of 6 large-scale LNG production lines, which will be carried out in two phases. Production is scheduled to start in late 2025.
