Malaysia's national oil company Petroliam Nasional Bhd has announced that it aims to build 30 to 40 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030 through its new business unit, Gentari. Petronas informed that a particular focus on renewable energy sources will be solar energy.
Renewable power generation will also include about 1.2 million tonnes of hydrogen per year. The company also hopes to become a major provider of green mobility solutions. Petronas announced that Gentari will strengthen the adoption and commercialization of green energy globally. Gentari's RE exploration will begin in Malaysia and Asia Pacific. Petronas has set targets for each renewable energy sector.
Gentari chairman Datuk Tunku Muhammad Taufik said the new platform will provide green and clean energy solutions to customers in Malaysia and overseas. "Our goal is to capture opportunities in the low carbon energy sector by enabling production scale and infrastructure availability to provide affordable and easy-to-use solutions and systems.
Renewable energy deployment by national oil companies
Gentari already has 1GW of solar assets in India, Dubai and Malaysia, serving more than 200 customers in more than 400 projects and growing. As far as green mobility is concerned, the entity has set up 170 electric vehicle charging stations in India and Malaysia. Petronas started expanding into renewable energy back in 2013. By 2018, this had increased to a total of five assets located in Malaysia and Italy.
