In the context of accelerating the construction of a powerful country in transportation, the scale of China's road network has continued to expand. On July 12, 2022, the "National Highway Network Planning" issued by the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Transport of China was announced to the public. The "Planning" proposes a layout plan for China's national road network to 2035, with a total scale of about 461,000 kilometers.

According to the "Planning", the total planned mileage of the national expressway network is about 162,000 kilometers, consisting of 7 capital radial lines, 11 north-south vertical lines, 18 east-west horizontal lines, 6 regional ring lines, 12 metropolitan ring lines, 30 The city ring line, 31 parallel lines, and 163 connecting lines are composed of the future construction and renovation needs of about 58,000 kilometers, including about 30,000 kilometers of expansion and reconstruction.

The planned total mileage of the ordinary national road network is about 299,000 kilometers, consisting of 12 capital radial lines, 47 north-south vertical lines, 60 east-west horizontal lines, and 182 connecting lines. The future construction and renovation needs are about 110,000 kilometers.

After the implementation of the "Plan", China's national highways will still maintain two levels of "national expressways + ordinary national highways". Ordinary national highways provide general, non-charged basic transportation services, and national highways provide efficient and fast transportation services.

China has successively issued a number of national arterial highway plans

Zhou Xiaoqi, deputy director of the Infrastructure Development Department of the National Development and Reform Commission, said that compared with the 2013 version of the plan, the total planned size has increased by about 60,000 kilometers. The new planned road network further strengthens the support for the development of urban agglomerations and metropolitan areas. The overall coverage of the national expressway network extends from medium and above cities with an urban population of more than 200,000 to cities and counties with an urban population of more than 100,000, and ordinary national highways. It further strengthens the inter-city passage and the connection to important scenic spots. Keywords: infrastructure, infrastructure construction, domestic engineering news, planning and investment

In order to promote the construction of the national road network with high quality, the "Planning" also puts forward various implementation requirements. For example, promoting green and low-carbon development, emphasizing energy conservation and emission reduction, ecological environmental protection and restoration in the whole life cycle of national highway construction, and proposing to build green highways according to local conditions; focusing on innovation and enabling development, emphasizing the full-cycle digital transformation of all elements of national highways, and proposing to promote Formulate and revise relevant standards to meet the needs of digital development; strictly control local government debt risks, adhere to doing our best and do what we can, and reasonably determine the scale and pace of construction.
