Norwegian renewable energy company Scatec will build three renewable energy projects in South Africa's Northern Cape province. Located in Kenhart, the three projects have a combined solar capacity of 540 MW and battery storage capacity of 225 MW/1,140 MWh.
Once the project is complete, the renewable assets will provide 150 megawatts of dispatchable power to the Kenhart area under a 20-year power purchase agreement. They will involve total capital expenditures of about $962 million, Scatec's largest investment to date.
Scatec CEO Terje Pilskog said the commercial and financial settlement of the Kenhardt project demonstrates the real commitment of our Scatec team and partners. The project is the first of its kind and will be one of the largest solar and battery facilities in the world. We are now looking forward to beginning construction on this unique and exciting project that will make a significant contribution to South Africa's economy and green energy sector.
The projects will be developed under the Risk Mitigated Independent Power Producer Procurement Program. Scatec will own 51% of the project, while local partner H1 Holdings will hold the remainder. Scatec will also be the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for the power plant and provide it with operations, maintenance and asset management services. The total value of the work will be around R13.7 billion. Keywords: engineering news, overseas news
Scatec's sub-Saharan Africa general manager, Jan Fourie, said it was an important milestone for renewable energy procurement and proof that the industry can provide much-needed power capacity to the grid. Scatec, together with Equinor and Hydro Rein, started construction work on the Mendubim solar project in Brazil. The company will hold a 33.3% interest in the 531MW solar project and provide EPC services for it.Editor/XingWentao
