South Korean battery and electronics company Samsung SDI held a groundbreaking ceremony for its second battery production facility in Malaysia. The company will invest US$1.3 billion to build the plant in Seremban in stages until completion in 2025.
The Samsung SDI Malaysia energy plant will produce the PRiMX 21700 cylindrical cells, with production expected to start in 2024. Yoonho Choi, President and CEO of Samsung SDI, said that today's groundbreaking ceremony will be the starting point for us to realize our vision of becoming a top global company by 2030. With the smooth completion and early stabilization of Plant 2, we will make SDIEM the center of the global battery industry. The company said it has decided to build a second factory in Malaysia due to the recent increase in demand for cylindrical batteries.
The global cylindrical battery market is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 8%, from the current 10.17 billion cells to 15.11 billion cells in 2027. Samsung SDI's new factory will produce batteries for a variety of applications, including power tools, miniature cars and electric vehicles. The company's first factory in Malaysia produces cylindrical batteries for electric vehicle customers. The company also has production sites in China, South Korea, the United States and Hungary.
Negeri Sembilan Chief Minister Aminuddin Harun said investment from high-impact industries such as Samsung SDIEM is integral to our vision to drive strong economic growth in Malaysia and Negeri Sembilan, which is part of our Vision Valley Malaysia 2.0 initiative outlined.
