The total length of the project is 39.07 kilometers, of which the river crossing tunnel is 11.185 kilometers long, the north line is 15.724 kilometers long, and the south line is 12.161 kilometers long. The west side of the steam ferry crosses the Yangtze River, goes ashore on the east side of the Baimao River mouth, and ends at 5.5 kilometers east of the Dongbang hub of Shanghai-Wuhan Expressway. ) 5 interchanges.

The whole line of the project adopts the standard construction of two-way six-lane expressway. The design speed of the Haimen South Interconnection to Bixi Interconnection Section (including the river crossing tunnel) is 100 km/h, and the design speed of the remaining sections is 120 km/h. The estimated total investment of the project is 35.741 billion yuan.

The project adopts the shield tunnel scheme to cross the Yangtze River. The shield tunnel has an inner diameter of 14.6 meters and an outer diameter of 16.0 meters. It is currently the longest underwater shield tunnel with the largest cross-section in China, and it can be called the first tunnel of the Yangtze River. After the preliminary design is approved by the Provincial Development and Reform Commission, it will continue to speed up the work of construction drawing design and land use approval.

The Haitai Yangtze River Tunnel is a highway-rail composite river-crossing channel to be built before 2025 in the "Layout Plan of the Yangtze River Trunk Line Crossing the River Channel (2020-2035)" issued by the National Development and Reform Commission.
