The UAE signed the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia at the 55th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting to be held in Cambodia from July 30 to August 6, 2022. The peace treaty was made by the founding members of ASEAN, an economic organization of 10 member countries: Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Cambodia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Vietnam and Laos.

Dr. Abdulnasser Alshaali, Assistant Minister for Economic and Trade Affairs at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, attended the signing ceremony on behalf of the UAE. Dr Alshaali said the signing of the TAC reflects the UAE's enthusiasm to strengthen and advance economic relations with ASEAN countries.

He highlighted global challenges that demonstrate the growing importance of multilateral cooperation, especially within regional and international organizations such as ASEAN. He said the signing of the TAC was the final step in the UAE's application to join ASEAN as a sectoral dialogue partner.

Dr. Alshaali said that as the UAE completes the final step towards attaining SDP status, it is important to underline the significant mutual benefits that this partnership will bring, which will fuel our joint efforts to address the UAE's pressing issues.
