Saudi Arabia's National Water Company has announced plans to launch 1,429 projects worth more than $28.4 billion to tender, making it the largest project package ever in the water distribution industry.

In a statement, NWC said the launch was part of its plan to develop water and environmental infrastructure in Saudi Arabia. This includes expanding the coverage of water and wastewater networks, increasing the capacity of sewage treatment plants, and extending the coverage of water services to all citizens and residents in all regions of the Kingdom. The company added that Eng Abdulrahman Abdulrahman Abdulmohsen A. Al Fadley, Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture and Chairman of the NWC, held a meeting with senior NWC executives to review the company's readiness to carry out such major national projects.
In May 2022, the UAE said the country was working on a desalination project worth more than $2 billion. Eng Nemer M Al-Shebl, acting chief executive of NWC, said the projects will help achieve the goals of the National Water Strategy and Vision 2030, diversify the economy and boost overall development. These projects will complement the sustainability of the Kingdom's water and environmental services, he added. In addition, Al-Shebl said, with the completion of these projects, water and wastewater coverage will increase significantly in all regions of the kingdom.
The acting CEO highlighted NWC's commitment to implementing these projects to the highest standards and adding local content, which will positively impact economic activity in the region, especially the industrial and real estate sectors, while also creating jobs. In June, Saudi authorities announced 93 utility infrastructure projects worth $2.26 billion.
The projects include 13 administrative regions, including cities and provinces in all six sectors. The NWC has earmarked 353 projects worth $10.36 billion for the western region; 240 projects for the central region, worth $3.77 billion; and 215 projects for the northern region, worth $3.44 billion, including Qassim, Hail, Jauf and the northern border. The company will also launch 328 projects worth over US$4 billion for the southern regions including Asir, Jazan, Najran and Baja; Within the Northwest Territories, 162 projects valued at more than $2 billion were launched. Additionally, the company plans to implement 117 projects valued at $4.44 billion in the Eastern region; 14 projects valued at over $723.6 million, supporting all industries.
