Recently, Tanzania Railways issued a tender notice for the 367km Uwenza-Gitega cross-border railway project. The project will be linked to Burundi's standard gauge railway.

Tanzania Railways said the two governments in Tambu have secured funding for the project, which will start in the 2022/2023 fiscal year, and companies interested in the project can submit bids by November 15.

The project adopts the design-build (Design and Build) mode. The construction content includes a main line of 282km and a branch loop of 85km. It is divided into two sections. Lashi), the second tender section is the cross-border section (Musungati-Kitega), with a length of 187km.
