Baltic Power, a joint venture between ORLEN Group and Northland Power, has awarded an offshore substation and foundation contract for the 1.2GW Baltic Power offshore wind farm in Poland. Offshore wind power projects will be built in the Baltic Sea.

The project will be built near Leba and Choczewo, nearly 23 kilometers offshore, and will have two offshore substations. These will receive energy produced by more than 70 turbines, each with a minimum capacity of 14 megawatts. The engineering, procurement, fabrication and installation contract for the offshore substation has been awarded to a consortium of Bladt Industries and Semco Maritime.

Germany-based Steelwind Nordenham has been awarded a contract to provide monopile foundations for all infrastructure elements of Baltic Power's offshore wind farm. According to Baltic Power, each wind turbine foundation will weigh 2,400 tonnes and have a height of 120m. Through the use of specialized vessels, the steel piles will be driven into the seabed to depths of up to 50m, the project holding company said. The base components will be transported and installed by Dutch marine construction company Van Oord. Smulders, a Belgian manufacturing company, will be responsible for supplying the transition pieces used to connect the foundations of the wind turbines, Baltic Power said.

Christian Voelcker, interim vice president of offshore construction at Northland Power, said the awarding of these supplier contracts marks a major project milestone for the Baltic Power project. With our expertise in the already established offshore wind resources in Germany and other parts of Europe, Baltic Power will play an important long-term role in Poland's clean energy transition. Working with PKN Orlen, this is a great opportunity for Northland to strengthen our commitment to the European offshore market and support the creation of an offshore wind hub in the Baltic Sea. Baltic Power is expected to sign contracts for all major components of the project's infrastructure and services by the end of 2022. This will allow construction of Polish offshore wind farms to start as planned in 2024.Editor/XingWentao
