Prysmian Group has been awarded two contracts worth more than EUR 800 million to supply cable systems for the grid connection of the DolWin4 and BorWin4 offshore wind farms in the German North Sea. The contracts were awarded by Amprion Offshore, a subsidiary of German transmission system operator Amprion. Under the contract, Prysmian will be responsible for the design, supply, installation and commissioning of onshore and subsea cables for the two projects, with a combined capacity of 1.8GW.

The Italian cable producer expects to supply nearly 1,000 kilometers of HVDC ±320kV single-core copper cables, which will be equipped with XLPE insulation. The company will use a variety of vessels to install submarine cables to ensure as little environmental impact as possible. Both cable systems have a transmission capacity of 900MW and each system contains two HVDC cables.

On land, two cable systems will be laid in parallel trenches in the main part of the 300km A-Nord underground cable corridor. Prysmian won the contract for the cable corridor project from Amprion in 2020 and is currently executing it. The submarine cable will travel from the offshore platform across Norderney Island through the Niedersächsisches Wattenmeer National Park before connecting to the onshore cable near Hilgenriedersiel.

Hakan Ozmen, Executive Vice President of Prysmian Projects, said that this is the first 320kV HVDC subsea project that Prysmian has partnered with Amprion Offshore GmbH, and commented on how Prysmian is consolidating its role as a reliable provider of support for Germany’s energy transition. Prominent role of partner in major infrastructure projects supporting Germany's energy transition. Keywords: engineering news, overseas news

The company said the land cables will be produced in Gron, France and Abbeville in the United States, while the submarine cables will be produced in Picara, Finland and Arcofelis, Italy. Delivery and commissioning of the two cable systems are expected to be completed in 2028.Editor/XingWentao
