Standing at a high place and looking far away, rows of photovoltaic panels like fish scales are arrayed in the Tengger Desert on the north edge of Wuwei City, Gansu Province, shining in the sunlight. Under the photovoltaic panel, the psammophytes are spitting new green, which is in sharp contrast with the desert sand in the distance.
Wuwei City is connected to Tengger Desert in the north and has suffered from sand disasters for a long time. However, it has a long sunshine period and abundant solar energy resources, making it an ideal place for developing photovoltaic new energy industry. Starting from October 2021, the demonstration project of 500000 kilowatt three-dimensional photovoltaic desertification control industrialization is being implemented here, focusing on desert.
Li Zhenhai, deputy director of the Development and Reform Commission of Wuwei City, introduced that the project will provide 900 million kilowatt hours of green power to the society every year, achieve an output value of 350 million yuan, save 280000 tons of standard coal, reduce 740000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, and effectively control more than 80000 mu of sand.Editor/Ma Xue
