On Oct 20, 2022, the Zhangye Pumped Storage power Station in Gansu Province was approved by the Gansu Provincial Development and Reform Commission. According to the introduction, Gansu Zhangye pumped storage power station is the national pumped storage medium - and long-term development plan (2021-2035) "fourteen five key implementation projects, Gansu province 2022 provincial key projects, Three Gorges Group key development projects.

Gansu Zhangye Pumped Storage Power Station is located in Ganzhou District and Sunan County, with a total installed capacity of 1.4 million kW, a total investment of 9.626 billion yuan, a rated water head of 576m, and the installation of 4 350MW reversible pump turbine electric generating units. The designed annual power generation and annual pumping consumption are 1.637 billion kWh and 2.183 billion kWh, respectively.
