On November 4, 2022, Shandong Provincial Department of Transport and the East China Regional Administration of Civil Aviation approved the preliminary design and budget of the new Zaozhuang Airport project, laying the foundation for the start of construction within this year.

The new Zaozhuang Airport project is a major infrastructure of Huaihe River Ecological Economic Belt and South Shandong Economic Circle, and also a major infrastructure construction project that the provincial Party Committee and the provincial government have decided to start within this year. It is of great significance for Zaozhuang City to serve and integrate into the new development pattern of the province, and promote the high-quality development of the border area between Shandong, Jiangsu, Henan and Anhui.

Since 2022, preliminary work on the construction of the new Zaozhuang Airport has been accelerated. On April 29, the National Development and Reform Commission approved the feasibility study report of the project; On October 14, CAAC East China Regional Administration approved the master plan of the airport; On October 17, the Ministry of Natural Resources approved the project advance land. After the approval of the preliminary design, the preliminary approval procedures of the project have been completed, and the project has officially entered the preparatory stage. The newly built Zaozhuang Airport is designed according to the annual passenger throughput of 1.2 million, cargo throughput of 7,000 tons, aircraft takeoff and landing sortits of 13,000, with a flight area grade index of 4C. According to the approval, the total investment of the project budget is 2.186 billion yuan. It will construct a runway of 2,600 meters long and 45 meters wide, apron of 11 slots, terminal of 14,000 square meters, parking lot of 21,000 square meters and related supporting facilities. After the completion of the project, it will further complement the shortcomings of civil aviation development in southern Shandong Province and provide important support for promoting the integrated development and high-quality development of the economic circle in southern Shandong Province.
