Speeding up the development of pumped storage energy plays an important role in speeding up the realization of carbon peak carbon neutral goal. On November 12, 2022, Muwangxi Pumped Storage Power Station in Taoyuan, Hunan Province, a key project planned for the 14th Five-Year Plan, was officially launched. It is also the first large-scale pumped storage power station in Hunan Province after the Party's 20th National Congress.
Taoyuan Muwangxi Pumped storage Power Station is located in Taoyuan County, Changde City, Hunan Province, surveyed and designed by Zhongnan Institute. The installed capacity of the power station is 1200 MW, with 4 installed units and 300 MW single unit capacity. The planned total investment is 8.6 billion yuan.
After completion, the power station is expected to generate 1.304 billion KWH of electricity per year, save 404,700 tons of standard coal in the power system, and correspondingly reduce 905,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, 23,000 tons of sulfur dioxide emissions and 11,000 tons of nitrogen oxides per year. It will mainly undertake the tasks of peak adjustment, valley filling, energy storage, frequency modulation, phase modulation and emergency backup of Hunan power system. It is of great significance for Taoyuan County to build a strong county of green energy, optimize the power structure of Taoyuan and Changde, promote the effective implementation of the "double carbon" goal, and promote the high-quality development of economy and society.
