Recently, at the construction site of Xintang in Guangzhou, a tractor laid a pair of 500-meter-long steel rails on the Guangzhou-Shanwei high speed railway foundation, marking the Guangzhou-Shanwei high speed railway has officially entered the stage of laying the rails.

According to the Guangzhou Project construction headquarters of China Railway Guangzhou Bureau Group Co., LTD., the construction of Guangzhou-Shantou high-speed Railway officially started on June 30, 2019. The main line length is about 203 km, with a designed speed of 350 km per hour. It is a national construction project in the 13th Five-Year Plan and an important part of the rail backbone of the Greater Bay Area high-speed railway.

Since the project started, Guangzhou Engineering Construction Headquarters has organized China Railway No. 5 Engineering Group Co., Ltd. and other participating units to actively plan and formulate scientific and effective construction technical and organizational plans in view of construction difficulties and key points of quality, safety and card control. To overcome a series of difficulties such as the construction of adjacent existing lines, high safety risks in the use of large equipment, tight construction deadlines, and the impact of the epidemic, the construction organization was constantly optimized. All box girders were prefabricated on September 3, 2022, and the entire Guangzhou-Shantou high-speed railway box girders were installed on October 25, laying the foundation for the track laying of the entire line.

Once completed, the Guangzhou-Shantou high-speed Railway will connect the Beijing-Guangzhou high-speed Railway, the Beijing-Hong Kong high-speed Railway and the coastal railway, further weaving the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area rail network. By then, the train running time between Guangzhou and Shanwei will be reduced from the current 2 hours to about 40 minutes, which will greatly boost the integration of eastern Guangdong into the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and be of great significance to the construction of the comprehensive transportation system of Shenzhen-Shantou Cooperation Zone, the "one-hour life circle" of Guangzhou, and the construction of Binhai New Area and Industrial New Town.
