Engie plans to build a 638MWh energy storage system in Chile

Engie Energy í a Chile announced that it plans to build a 638MWh energy storage system at the Coya Solar Power Plant in Antofagasta, northern Chile. Engie Energia Chile, a subsidiary of French energy company Engie in Chile, said it planned to deploy a 638MWh storage facility in the Coya photovoltaic power station of Maira Elena in Antofagasta region in northern Chile.

Sungrow, a Chinese manufacturer, will provide batteries for the project. The storage system will be based on the company's PowerTitan liquid cooled energy storage technology. The BESS Coya project will be the largest storage device being developed in Latin America.

Rosaline Corinteen, Executive Director of Chile's Engie Energy í a, said that the BESS Coya project would allow clean solar energy to be delivered to the power grid at night, increase the flexibility of dispatching solar power plants to the national power system, make them more efficient, and provide greater supply security.

Koya Nuclear Power Station will be put into operation with 181 MW in October 2021. Engie currently operates another storage system in Arica, Chile. The system will be put into use in 2019, based on lithium ion batteries, with a capacity of 2MWh.Editor/Xing Wentao
