Egypt straddles South West Asia and North Africa, borders the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea, and is one of the largest economies in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), with a population of more than 100 million.
Since the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference was held in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, the new energy investment in Egypt attracted global capital attention, and the market suddenly became hot. The Egyptian government also took this opportunity to show the world its determination to turn green. As the host of COP27, Egypt has signed more than ten agreements with foreign companies at this conference to build green hydrogen plants in the Suez Canal Economic Zone.
On December 16, 2022, the Egyptian government said that the Egyptian Cabinet had granted the permit to build a green ammonia project in Ain Sokhna Industrial Zone, with an annual capacity of 1 million tons. In a statement, the Egyptian government added that the project, which is in the charge of the Egyptian Green Ammonia Company, will cost about 5.5 billion dollars, and can provide about 10600 jobs in the construction and operation stages.
Mohamed Shaq, Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, said that 2022 would be Egypt's "Year of Green Hydrogen". Green hydrogen plays an important role in achieving carbon neutral targets in energy intensive industries and heavy or long-distance transportation industries. Green hydrogen can replace fossil fuel hydrogen production (gray hydrogen and blue hydrogen) and fossil fuel consumption in the current industrial and transport sectors, and is a future emerging energy to achieve the greenhouse gas emission reduction goal. In addition, green hydrogen produced from solar and wind energy will also assist in the integration of new energy systems. Keywords: overseas news, engineering news
For these reasons, many countries have formulated green hydrogen strategies, including Egypt. The Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources of Egypt said that Egypt's goal is to achieve 42% renewable energy in its energy structure by 2030, which is supported by the green hydrogen production action plan currently being developed by the government. Egypt will expand blue hydrogen as a low-carbon fuel in the short to medium term, and the ultimate goal is to turn to green hydrogen.Editor/Xing Wentao
