On January 10, 2023, the reconstruction and expansion project of the Beijing-Hong Kong-Macao Expressway from the boundary between Hubei and Henan to Junshan was officially started in Hubei Xiaogan section, and the Beijing-Hong Kong-Macao Expressway in Hubei Province was officially newly built. After the project is completed, it will change from the current 4 lanes to 8 lanes.

The reconstruction and expansion project of the northern section of Hubei Province of Beijing-Hong Kong-Macao Expressway starts at Jiuliguan, Dawu County, Xiaogan City, connects with the southern section of Beijing-Hong Kong-Macao Expressway, and ends at the Wuhan West Hub to connect the Beijing-Hong Kong-Macao Expressway and the Shanghai-Chongqing Expressway, with a total length of 158 kilometers and an investment scale of about 21.6 billion yuan. It is currently the largest single expressway reconstruction and expansion project with the highest investment amount in Hubei Province.

The project is reconstructed and expanded according to the standard of 8-lane expressway with full access control and full interchange. The design speed is 120km/h. There are 29228.94m/202 bridges, 16 interchanges, 4 service areas and 2 parking areas along the whole line.

The commencement activities on the same day will be carried out in the 4th bid section of China Railway 11th Bureau Group. This section includes 18.7 km of civil works in Phase I and 35.9 km of pavement works in Phase II. The project leader of China Railway 11th Bureau introduced that the Beijing-Hong Kong-Macao Expressway, as one of the major arteries of traffic connecting the north and south of China, is extremely busy, which poses challenges to the construction safety, construction progress and other fields. The reconstruction and expansion construction will be carried out without affecting the road traffic.

It is reported that the reconstruction and expansion project of the Hubei section of the Beijing-Hong Kong-Macao Expressway will further alleviate the traffic pressure of the Beijing-Hong Kong-Macao Expressway, smooth the north-south traffic arteries, strengthen the function of Wuhan's comprehensive transportation hub, and improve the network structure of the expressway in Hubei Province.

The Xiaogan section of the Beijing-Hong Kong-Macao Expressway Reconstruction and Expansion Project is 121.1km long and has an investment of 14 billion yuan, which is the largest single traffic project in Xiaogan. The project route starts from Jiuliguan, Dawu County, Xiaogan City, passes through Dawu County, Xiaochang County, and Xiaonan District, Xiaogan City in the south, and is mainly reconstructed and expanded along the existing Beijing-Hong Kong-Macao Expressway with the scheme of "widening on both sides and widening locally".
