On February 16, 2023, the bidding announcement for the construction drawing review of the Fujian section of the new Zhangzhou-Shantou high-speed railway was released on the Jiangxi Provincial Public Resources Trading Platform. It marks that the Zhangshan-Shantou high-speed railway project is about to enter the stage of full-scale construction.

The feasibility study report on the new Zhangzhou-Shantou high-speed railway was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission in January 2023. This is also the first national high-speed railway project approved in 2023.

The Zhangzhou-Shantou high-speed railway is an important section of the nationally planned coastal high-speed railway channel Ningbo-Guangzhou high-speed railway. The project is planned to officially start construction in May 2023, with a planned construction period of 4.5 years. After the opening of the Zhangshan high-speed railway, the Fuzhou-Guangzhou section of the southeast coastal high-speed railway channel with a speed of 350 kilometers per hour will be the first to be completed.

The total investment of the Zhangshan-Shantou high-speed railway is about 38.9 billion yuan, of which the Fujian section is 25.9 billion yuan and the Guangdong section is 13 billion yuan. The Zhangshan high-speed railway project was approved for feasibility study in January 2023 and is expected to start construction in May 2023.

After the completion of the Zhangshan high-speed railway, it will open up the key nodes of the southeast coastal high-speed railway passenger transport channel, and become the main channel for the Yangtze River Delta, the Pearl River Delta, and the southwestern region to communicate with the southeastern coastal region.
