An international consortium with German participation has reportedly signed an agreement with the Mauritanian government for a $34 billion green hydrogen project with up to 10GW of electrolyser capacity.

The newspaper cited Conjuncta, a German company involved in the project, as saying the project would have a production capacity of up to 8 million tonnes per year of ammonia or other hydrogen-based end products.

The first phase of the project will be located northeast of Nouakchott, the coastal capital of West Africa, and is expected to be completed in 2028 with a planned capacity of 400MW. Egyptian energy provider Infinity and the United Arab Emirates' Masdar are also involved in the project.

Congutta CEO Stefan Liebing said: "There will be strong ties with Germany as a technology supplier and potential buyer of green energy.

For some time, Germany has been trying to boost its renewable energy capacity to offset Russia's fuel imports and meet climate goals. In December, Berlin approved the construction of the country's first hydrogen pipeline network.Editor / He Yurong
