On March 24, 2023, the power generation ceremony of unit 5 of the Lower Kaifu Gorge Hydropower Station in Zambia, undertaken by Power Construction Corporation of China (Power China), was held. Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema unveiled the plaque and pressed the start button , which marks that all units of the hydropower station are put into operation.
In his speech at the ceremony, Hichilema said that Zambia and China have worked together through solidarity and overcame numerous difficulties, and finally realized the successful delivery of the Lower Kaifu Gorge Hydropower Station. This is the latest example of Zambia-China friendship. He said that after the Lower Kaifu Gorge Hydropower Station is put into operation, it will not only meet China's electricity demand, but also help Zambia export electricity to Malawi, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Namibia and other countries.
Du Xiaohui, Chinese Ambassador to Zambia, said in his speech that the Lower Kaifu Gorge Hydropower Station is a project that the heads of state of China and Zambia care about personally.

The Lower Kaifu Gorge Hydropower Station is located on the Kafue River about 90 kilometers south of Lusaka, the capital of Zambia. It was constructed by China Power Construction and started construction in November 2015. The hydropower station has installed 5 mixed-flow generating units with a total installed capacity of 750 megawatts. After all of them are in operation, they will greatly improve Zambia's power supply capacity.
