UK-based flexible energy generation and storage company Statera Energy has unveiled plans to develop a large-scale green hydrogen project in Kintor, Aberdeenshire. The company intends to develop Kintore Hydrogen as a 3GW electrolyser project that will use Scotland's remaining wind energy to create green hydrogen.
The company said the project would improve the UK's energy security, build vital infrastructure, enable private investment in the green economy and create skilled local jobs.
Tom Vernon, Managing Director of Statera Energy, said Kintore Hydrogen is another example of Statera’s commitment to balancing the grid and meeting the challenge of decarbonizing the UK’s energy system. The project will produce green hydrogen at scale at optimal locations, providing low-cost, safe and storable energy to the UK system. Kintore will be Statera's flagship project. Today we welcome the government's support for this nationally significant project which will make a meaningful contribution to the UK's clean energy ambitions.
The UK Government has announced that Kintore Hydrogen has been selected for its Net Zero Hydrogen Fund (NZHF) Strand1 competition. The government will fund the project's front-end engineering design, planning and permitting work through the Strand1 of the Net Zero Hydrogen Fund. It will also support the development of an initial 500MW phase of the Kintore Hydrogen development. The proposed FEED study is expected to be completed by 2024, ready for a final investment decision by 2025, with full production commencing in 2030.
Julian Leslie, National Grid ESO network and chief engineer, said Kintore Hydrogen could play a key role in easing grid constraints and as long-term energy storage, beyond the expected capabilities of battery storage and pumped hydro storage. It presents an opportunity to reduce costs across the system, while also contributing to the decarbonisation of the country's energy grid and the maintenance of the UK's energy security system.Editor/XingWentao
