A group of seven German energy companies is collaborating to build 10GW of green hydrogen capacity by 2030. The deal is in line with Germany's hydrogen targets for the same period. The companies, which include steel giant Salzgitter and the German subsidiary of oil and gas giant BP, announced the deal to replace gas-based gray hydrogen with solar and wind green hydrogen in German heavy industry. In Germany, gas distributors Nowega and Thyssengas, oil company NWO, energy company Uniper and Dutch gas supplier Gasunie will all join the group.
The project centers on Germany's only Wilhelmshaven deep sea port. It will see the site become a hub for hydrogen production in the country. Several major chemical companies, including INEOS, have German bases in the city, which contributes to easier access to chemicals.
Uniper and BP have also asked the EU to fund ammonia imports to support the project. Ammonia can be used as a carrier of hydrogen, which has higher stability and energy density, and is easier to store. Both Nowega and NWO will contribute to the project existing pipeline infrastructure from their respective grids.
Germany bets on hydrogen
For their part, Salzgitter has put their eggs in the hydrogen basket. The German government has allocated more than $1 billion to one of these companies, Salzgitter, to diffuse green hydrogen in its steelmaking process. The intention to continue advancing hydrogen connectivity demonstrates Germany's commitment to consolidating green hydrogen in its heavy industry.
More than $5 billion has been committed to help transform Wilhelmshaven into a green energy infrastructure hub. Ørsted, Wintershall Dea and Eon have committed to funding the area as part of the Wilhelmshaven Energy Center project. Wintershall alone has committed $1 billion to two projects. The town will also be an important link to the UK. The North Sea Submarine Corridor will guarantee 1.4GW of power transmission.Editor/XingWentao
