German power company RWE has broken ground on the Thor Offshore Wind Farm, 22 kilometers off the west coast of Denmark's Jutland peninsula.
Construction work on the onshore substation of the wind farm in the town of Lemvig started. The 1GW capacity of the Thor Wind Farm will power 1 million Danish homes annually. It will start operating in late 2027 and will be powered by 72 Siemens Gamesa 14MW turbines.
The Spanish wind turbine manufacturer was awarded the contract in April 2023. Half of the turbine towers will be made of CO2-reducing steel. Siemens Energy and Danish civil engineering and infrastructure company MT Højgaard Danmark are carrying out civil engineering and construction works. Siemens was responsible for the design, construction and installation of the project.
Pia Lanken, CEO of RWE Renewables Denmark, said: "I am delighted to be part of today's groundbreaking ceremony, which will be a big step in Denmark's green transition. We've worked closely with local communities, politicians, fishermen and educational institutions.
It is vital that we engage in dialogue with these stakeholders as we wish to contribute to local development. This is one of the reasons why we committed to employ at least 30 vocational trainees for this major project. In April 2023, RWE awarded the offshore substation contract to Netherlands-based offshore service provider HSM Offshore Energy.Editor/XingWentao
