On May 10, 2023, the safety construction project of the Kangshan Flood Detention Area in Poyang Lake, Jiangxi Province officially started construction. The project is listed as an important flood storage and detention area in the "National Flood Storage and Detention Area Construction and Management Plan" and "Yangtze River Basin Flood Control Plan". The project has been included in the scope of 150 major water conservancy projects in the country. It is a flood storage and detention area construction project specified in the "14th Five-Year Water Safety Guarantee Plan", and it is also one of the 66 major water conservancy projects promoted by the Ministry of Water Resources. The total investment of the project is 1.165 billion yuan. The main tasks are to construct flood diversion control projects and safety construction projects. The total construction period is 28 months.

Poyang Lake Kangshan Flood Detention Area is located on the southeast bank of Poyang Lake, downstream of the confluence of Ganjiang River, Fuhe River and Xinjiang River. The total rainwater collection area in the area is 450.30 square kilometers, of which the flood storage area is 292.98 square kilometers, and the effective flood storage volume is 1.569 billion cubic meters. According to survey statistics, as of August 2020, the population below the 20.68-meter flood storage level in the Kangshan flood storage and detention area involves 41 administrative villages in 8 townships (towns, fields) in Yugan County, with a total of 10,916 households and 42,657 people.

The safety construction project of the Poyang Lake Kangshan Flood Storage and Detention Area is a key project related to the overall flood control of the Yangtze River, and it is also a major popular project that benefits the people along the lake.
