Hydrogen Norway has announced plans for Norway's largest green hydrogen production facility. The 270MW plant in Ørskog will produce 4,000 TPa of green hydrogen per year. The plant has been allocated an electrolytic capacity of 20MW, while the company has applied for a further capacity of 250MW.

Commenting on the project, Jens Berge, CEO of Hydrogen Norway, said: "This is an important milestone in the development of large-scale green hydrogen production in Norway and we look forward to being part of the development of a new forward-looking industry." From Ørskog, a large amount of green hydrogen will be exported to Europe, and part of the production capacity will meet the needs of Norwegian customers. Provaris Energy, an Australian company specialising in hydrogen transport and storage, will boost exports.

According to Provaris CEO Martin Carolan, this is a large-scale project that will efficiently meet the local demand for hydrogen and allow for the flexible delivery of the required green energy to Europe.

Provaris focuses on hydrogen compression, which it believes has minimal technical hurdles, a small environmental footprint, and avoids the costly process of liquidizing hydrogen for transport. The two companies signed an initial memorandum of understanding in January 2023 to determine the location of the project and technical analysis for production and export. The efficiency of our supply chain, based on compression, allows for flexible production, storage and transportation solutions, making it a competitive item in the green transition.

Hydrogen Norway claims that the plant could reduce emissions by up to 500,000 tonnes per year. In January 2023, Norwegian company Equinor announced that it was also taking steps to produce hydrogen in Europe. The company has partnered with RWE to build gas-fired low-hydrocarbon power plants instead of the coal-fired plants previously used.Editor/XingWentao
