Pumped storage is an important way for countries around the world to ensure the safe and stable operation of their power systems. On June 30, 2023, the investment decision for the Zhangye Pumped Storage Power Station project in Gansu Province passed the review of the Yangtze River Power Shareholders' Meeting, marking the completion of all preliminary work for the power station and the official transition to the engineering construction phase.
The Pumped-storage hydroelectricity is located at the junction of Pandaoshan on the left bank of the mountain pass of Heihe River in Zhangye City and Ganzhou District in Sunan County, Gansu Province, with a design installed capacity of 1.4 million kilowatts. It is included in the key implementation project of the "14th Five Year Plan" of the National Medium and Long term Development Plan for Pumped Storage (2021-2035) and the provincial key project in 2022 in Gansu Province, and is the first pumped storage project invested and constructed by China Yangtze Power. The power station is expected to have its first unit put into operation for power generation in 2028, and all units will be put into operation for power generation in 2029.
At present, the ventilation and safety tunnel and access tunnel of Zhangye Pumped-storage hydroelectricity have been started. The construction of water supply and power supply, the connecting road between the upper and lower reservoirs, the construction of management camps and other preparatory projects are progressing in an orderly manner, striving to achieve the goal of starting the main plant project by the end of the year.
