Recently, according to University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei Advanced Light Source Project, a major national science and technology infrastructure construction project during the 14th Five Year Plan period, was officially approved by the state on June 7, and the commencement ceremony is planned to be held in September 2023. The successful approval of this project means that another major scientific facility in Hefei has been approved and is about to start construction!

So far, Synchrotron radiation is still the most effective and systematic tool for studying the micro world, also known as the beacon of science and technology. Beijing Electron–Positron Collider II is called the first generation light source, Hefei National Synchrotron radiation Laboratory is called the second generation light source, and Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility is called the third generation light source.

Hefei Advanced Light Source (HLS) will be the most advanced fourth generation Synchrotron light source in the world and the only low-energy area in Asia. Brightness is one of the main upgraded features. Adopting a more complex accelerator structure, it has higher brightness and better coherence, and its characteristics can achieve accurate measurement of electronic states, chemical states, and light element structures in complex systems. The project is expected to be completed in 2027.

At present, Hefei has three completed large scientific devices, namely, the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak, the stable strong magnetic field experimental device, and the Synchrotron light source. The performance of the three devices has been continuously improved. The comprehensive research facility for the key systems of the fusion reactor host under construction has fully entered the development stage of key components, and is expected to be officially completed by 2025. At present, Hefei has more than ten national heavy weapons under construction and pre research, making it one of the cities with a relatively concentrated concentration of national heavy weapons in China and even around the world.
