On November 29, the reporter learned from the China Power Construction Group Chengdu Survey and Design Research Institute Co., LTD. (hereinafter referred to as: "China Power Construction Chengdu Institute") that the total installed capacity of 2.1 million kilowatts of Daofu pumped storage power station project has been approved by the Sichuan Provincial Development and Reform Commission, which is the first large-scale conventional pumped storage project approved by the province.

It is understood that the Daofu pumped storage power Station project was invested and developed by Yalong River Hydropower Development Co., LTD. The project is located in Shika Township, Daofu County, Ganzi Prefecture. It is a daily regulated pure pumped storage power station with a total installed capacity of 2.1 million kilowatts, a planned total investment of about 15.1 billion yuan, and a designed annual generating capacity of 2.994 billion kilowatt-hours, making it the second highest hydropower station in China.

In 2021, Daofu pumped storage power station, as a key implementation project of the "14th Five-Year Plan", was included in the national "Medium and Long-Term Pumped Storage Development Plan (2021-2035)". In order to promote the preliminary work of the project, China Power Construction Chengdu Institute dispatched design and technical personnel, which lasted nearly 2 years to complete the preliminary tasks. In October 2022, the project pre-feasibility study report passed the review; In May 2023, three special reports, including the selection of normal water storage level in the feasibility stage of the project, the general layout planning of construction, and the comparison and selection of the layout pattern of the hub, passed the review.

After the completion of the project, it will be connected to the Sichuan main network at 500 kV voltage level. "Since there is no experience in the construction of large-scale pumping and storage projects in high-altitude areas for reference, the engineering design, construction and electrical equipment manufacturing are extremely exploratory and challenging." Yu Chuntao said.

It is reported that the Daofu pumped storage power station project mainly serves the Sichuan power grid, undertaking tasks such as peak loading, valley filling, energy storage, frequency modulation, phase modulation, emergency backup and promotion of new energy development and utilization, which is of great significance to the construction of a clean energy demonstration province in Sichuan, improving power supply assurance and optimizing power structure, and promoting energy construction and economic and social development in ethnic areas.
